Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center a.k.a. Zoo

Not far from Portage Glacier is one of the Alaska Wildlife Conservation Centers. Don told me it
would be like going to a zoo (and it kinda was), but I wanted to see the animals anyway. Except for this neurotic porcupine which ran around and around it's cage, the other animals seemed happy and had lots of roaming room.

This lazy bear lost his mama on the road when he was a young cub and never learned how to survive in the wild. He was lucky to be found and given to the Conservation Center, otherwise he would have been a tasty meal for another animal.
And ain't this moose so cute....finding a way to scratch that itch.

Baby Muskox and (orange) Baby Bison/Buffalo.

Grown-ups are never far away.

The Sitka Black-tailed Deer almost looks like he is smiling at us.

The rack on this Caribou is so much larger than I ever thought they would have. Imagine how fast the rack must grow because he looses it every year. It must be heavy because the Caribou never lifted his head very high when we were there.

But this Caribou posed well for us, almost looks like he is puckering up for a kiss.

And the baby Caribou

Mom is never far away.

The young elk look like he is snickering at us.

Mom and Dad Elk are ready for a stroll around their available space.

Elk are so statuesque

This youngin' seems to have a lot to say.

All in all, it was fun to become acquainted with all
these different animals. Never know what we might or might not see in the wild, after all. BBFN, Karen and Don

p.s. Our disclaimer: The Conservation Centers in Alaska are dedicated to rehabilitation of and caring for injured animals and preserving Alaska's wildlife through public education. Animals that cannot be returned back into the wild are given permanent homes at the Centers. They in no way represent themselves as a zoo, nor should they be looked upon in that way.
