Coral Pink Sand Dunes State Park - Utah
Outside Kanab, Ut. the State Park sits at an elevation of 6,000 feet above sea level comprising 1,200 acres of open riding of OHV'sthrough the astonishing pink coral sand dunes. Because of the high amount of percipitation the moisture allows for a wide variety of pine, plants, sanddune grasses and wildflowers.
Mule deer coyotes, kit foxes, jackrabbits, and small rodents also call the park home. Adjacent to the dunes is a 22 site campground also offering a firepit for dutch oven cooking. While we were there we did see a couple OHV's have a go at the dune riding.
Dunes are created by sand, high winds, and a unique influence upon the high winds. In the case of the coral pink sand dunes the color is created as the color is created as the high winds increased in velocity after passing through a notch between the Moquity and the Moccasin mountains. The higher the velocity carries grains of sand from the eroding Navajo mountain sandstone into the oven valley where the winds decrease, depositing the sand. The entire phenomenon is known as the Venturi Effect.
